Yahoo launches news blog "Upshot"

It is common knowledge that Yahoo has been struggling to keep up with their competitors. Once the go-to search engine, now they are trying to compete in a world where Google seems to rule almost everything.

In an effort to stray away from that, they have launched a news blog called Upshot. The service will combine search engine marketing techniques with credited journalists and writers to essentially blog the news that people are most looking for. Raw search data from consumers will be combined with experienced writers to create a wholesome news analysis. Yahoo has hired many celebrated writers to supplement Upshot and make it a credible service.

This shows Yahoo's desire to become more of a media presence. They are well aware of what Google is and what they are becoming, so they are simply differentiating themselves by using what they have - search engine optimization and marketing techniques. They are also creating a "Style Guide" for digital content which will provide guidelines for how to approach these types of subjects, furthering their position with Upshot.

I think this is a good move for Yahoo. I congratulate them for really trying to position themselves more as a media presence and not just laying down to Google. There are still some sections to Yahoo, like Games and Finance, where they are extremely popular, and I think Upshot will be the boost they need to regain some valued market share.
