Reinventing Journalism and the Newspaper Biz

Posted by Chris Consorte

So most of us know, by now, that the US Newspaper business is in trouble. The Internet has way too much free, real-time, content out there to make buying a printed newspaper seem like a waste of time and money.

Can this be fixed? The article below asks just that question - essentially looking for a band-aid for the newspaper industry and journalism itself. I'm not smart enough to figure out the fix, but I have two ideas.

The first idea is to make newspapers a bit more like the web when it comes to content - and make them able to have readers contribute. Essentially, putting part of the journalism in the hands of the readers - who often have viewpoints that are put into Blogs online. People - the readers - want to share their voice. YouTube and social networking have proven this - and we're not going backwards now.

The second idea is to have newspapers do revenue-sharing with advertisers - so to have sort of a a shared "skin-in-the-game" when it comes to promotion. This said, rather than the advertiser "risk" 100% of the ad price, the publisher will help track responses to ads and share in the revenue gained from the ads placed. This can be done - and ultimately, it may make more advertisers jump into the game if their risk in advertising is mitigated.

Just a couple of ideas - the business needs help. Without serious business model changes, the newspaper business is going to continue to suffer. They need to think out of the box.
