Subliminal Trickery?

Posted by Chris Consorte

We all think we're pretty smart. And we really don't like to be tricked. So when we hear we've been exposed to subliminal advertising, we're all on-gaurd to see if we were "caught".

Read a great article today on Ferrari. Their sponsor, Philip Morris, advertises Malboro brand cigarettes subliminally on both their race-car and the driver's uniform. It's basically a bar-coded patch that advertises the brand.

Your mind wouldn't see it outright - but your subconscious mind is processing the advertising anyway. However, isn't pure repetition of TV and radio commercials a form of subliminal advertising in itself? We're constantly being bombarded with 3,000 plus marketing messages daily from commercials, to online banners to billboards on the Interstate.

Tricky? Perhaps. But ultimately, one can make the argument that whatever it takes to make you buy is what's needed in today's competitive marketing landscape.
